The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) and ICDL Africa signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2019 to support the development of digital skills among science and mathematics teachers across Africa. The agreement marked an important step in combining internationally recognised digital skills certification with teacher capacity-building initiatives aimed at improving STEM education.
AIMS is a renowned pan-African network of centres of excellence dedicated to postgraduate education, research, and public engagement in the mathematical sciences. The organisation’s mission is to drive Africa’s transformation through innovative scientific training, technical advancement, and research that delivers benefits for society.
Under the three-year partnership agreement, ICDL Africa was selected as the digital skills provider for the AIMS Teacher Training Programme, an ambitious initiative designed to train more than 4,000 science and mathematics teachers. The programme aims to equip educators with the digital competencies required to integrate technology effectively into teaching and learning environments.
As part of the project’s initial phase, ICDL Africa and AIMS trained and certified 49 master trainers from a cohort of 90 educators. These trainers were tasked with cascading their knowledge and skills to thousands of teachers, creating a multiplier effect that would expand digital literacy and technology-enabled teaching practices across participating schools and communities.
The training focused on helping teachers use digital technologies confidently and effectively in the classroom. By developing practical ICT skills and promoting the use of digital tools, the initiative supports the delivery of modern, interactive, and increasingly connected learning environments. The programme also contributes to broader efforts to prepare students for success in a digital economy where technology skills are becoming essential.
During the signing of the agreement, Thierry Zomahoun, President and CEO of AIMS, highlighted the potential for future collaboration as AIMS expanded its activities across the continent, including plans to establish operations in Côte d’Ivoire. This reflected a shared commitment between AIMS and ICDL Africa to strengthening digital skills and educational capacity throughout Africa.
The partnership demonstrates how collaboration between leading educational institutions and internationally recognised certification providers can help educators develop the skills required for 21st-century teaching. By supporting teachers with globally benchmarked digital skills training, AIMS and ICDL Africa are contributing to stronger STEM education systems and better learning outcomes for future generations.
ICDL Africa Signed an MoU with AIMS to be the digital skills provider for an AIMS Project named ‘Teacher Training Programme’. The MoU will run for 3 years and train more than 4000 Science and Mathematics teachers. This year ICDL Africa together with AIMS trained & certified 49 of the 90 trainers who will be training other Mathematics and Science teachers to build their capacity in using ICT as a tool in their teaching career.
The purpose of this training is to offer knowledge and skills to teachers to be able to conduct smart classroom across the country. During the MoU signing Thierry Zomahoun, President and CEO of AIMS mentioned that AIMS will be starting activities in Ivory Coast and they will consider working with ICDL there as well.
