The American Council on Education (ACE) evaluated a number of ICDL Foundation certification modules through its nationally recognised ACE CREDIT® programme, demonstrating the academic quality and relevance of ICDL’s digital skills certifications. Through this review, ACE recommended college credit for selected ICDL modules, providing independent recognition of the learning outcomes achieved through ICDL certification.
ACE is one of the most influential organisations in higher education in the United States. Through ACE CREDIT®, it evaluates workplace learning, professional certifications and training programmes and provides recommendations that colleges and universities may use when considering the award of academic credit for prior learning.
ACE Credit Recommendations for ICDL Modules
Following its review, ACE recommended academic credit for several ICDL modules, recognising that the knowledge and skills demonstrated through certification were comparable to learning achieved in college-level coursework. The modules reviewed included:
- ECDL / ICDL Advanced Spreadsheets (2 credits)
- ECDL / ICDL Computing (2 credits)
- ECDL / ICDL Presentation (1 credit)
- ECDL / ICDL Spreadsheets (1 credit)
- ECDL / ICDL Word Processing (1 credit)
These recommendations were in effect for the review period from 1 October 2017 to 30 September 2020.
Validating Digital Skills Through Independent Evaluation
The ACE review process provides independent validation of programme quality, learning outcomes and assessment standards. ACE’s recognition of ICDL modules demonstrated that essential workplace digital skills, including productivity software, document creation, data management and computing fundamentals, can represent rigorous, measurable learning worthy of academic recognition.
The evaluation further reinforced ICDL’s position as an internationally recognised certification standard used by education providers, employers and government organisations around the world to assess and develop digital competence.
Bridging Education and Workforce Development
The ACE recommendations highlighted the growing importance of digital competence within higher education and workforce development. By recognising learning achieved through professional certification, ACE helped create pathways between workplace skills development and academic achievement.
For learners, this provided an opportunity to gain formal recognition for skills acquired through ICDL certification.
