ICDL Accreditation by Kenya National Qualifications Authority

On Monday, 5 April 2022, ICDL was awarded an accreditation certificate by the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) during a ceremony held at Sankara, Nairobi, Kenya.

This auspicious event was graced by the Guest of Honor Ms. Maureen Mbaka (Chief Administrative Secretary, Ministry of ICT, Innovation and Youth Affairs), Dr. Juma Mukhwana (Director General/CEO, KNQA), Ms. Rosemary Njogu (Chairperson KNQA Council, CPA), Mr. Julius Serem (Technical and Vocational Education Training Authority-TVETA), Mr. Damien O’Sullivan (C.E.O, ICDL Foundation), Ms. Solange Umulisa (General Manager, ICDL Africa), ICDL Partners and members of the fourth estate.

The accreditation and mapping of ICDL to Level 3 on the Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF), is an indication of the level of confidence that the government has in the quality and relevance of the ICDL Program in this digital age. One of the mandates of KNQA is to equate local and foreign qualifications and sets standards for accreditation, assessment, and quality assurance of qualifications awarded.

In keynote speeches made, it was noted that the digital gap brought to the limelight during the onset of COVID-19 brought to the forefront the need to equip the youth with digital skills. At a time when cybercrime has become a major threat, it was also noted that there is a need to equip individuals and communities with digital skills in order for them to know how to protect themselves.

The award of the KNQA accreditation certificate, “…is a demonstration of the Government’s commitment to providing quality education and training to develop the knowledge, skills, and competencies of the youth and general workforce”. This reinforces the recognition of the digital skills offered by the ICDL globally.

Recently, ICDL Africa together with Rwanda’s Ministry of Education and the Ministry of ICT and Innovation, organized a meeting with over 45 Higher Learning Institutions to learn more about how Higher Learning Institutions can implement ICDL in their respective institutions with the overarching goal of having all students graduate with an internationally recognized digital skills certification.
