Official Launch of Nanjing Vocational Colleges’ 2024 ICDL Teacher Training Project for ‘Upskilling the Future Workforce for the Digital Economy’


Nanjing, April 2024 – In a strategic move to accelerate the development of China with highly knowledgeable, digitally advanced, and skilled workforce in line with the frameworks of the “Educational Digitisation Action Plan 2.0” and “Digitisation of Vocational Education Development Direction,” Nanjing Vocational Colleges and Nanjing Vocational Education (Adult) Teaching and Research Office have launched the ICDL Teacher Training Project for ‘Upskilling the Future Workforce for the Digital Economy.’ 

The official project launch conference was chaired by Mr. Zhang Hong, Director of Nanjing Vocational Education (Adult) Teaching and Research Office, and featured the presence of notable figures, including Mr. Damien O’Sullivan, CEO of ICDL Foundation, Mr. Pan Dongbiao, Level II Rank Inspector of Nanjing Education Bureau, Mr. Zhao Lin, Director of the Vocational Education Teaching Resources Division of China’s National Center for Educational Technology (NCET), Mr. Huang Ziliang, Level I Division Rank Official of Nanjing Education Bureau, Mr. Liu Jiangang, Deputy Director of Nanjing Education Bureau, Ms. Tina Wu, General Manager of ICDL Asia, and Mr. Lan Xiaoyu, General Manager of ICDL China. The conference also witnessed the participation of industry leaders, principals from various Nanjing vocational colleges, and 60 trainees who will participate in the project. 

Mr. Zhao Lin, Director of the Vocational Education Teaching Resources Division of China’s National Center for Educational Technology (NCET), emphasised two pivotal aspects of advancing Nanjing’s educational digitisation via training programs during his speech. Firstly, he underscored the imperative role of vocational colleges through actively engaging and prioritising the implementation of projects to garner invaluable experience and refine best practices. Secondly, he stressed the importance of enriching content to align with industry demands and advocating the localisation of project training by integrating local and national elements. Lastly, he also encourages active participation in both local and international digital competitions as a means to foster and incentivise learning experiences.  

Mr. Damien O’Sullivan, CEO of the ICDL Foundation, provided a comprehensive overview of ICDL, highlighting its significance as a globally recognised digital skill standard and commitment to empowering educators to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry requirements to equip individuals with essential digital competencies necessary for success in various professional roles within the industry. Additionally, he also accentuated how ICDL enables business enterprises to access a digitally skilled professional workforce with a standardized digital framework, thus enhancing its effectiveness and relevance. 

Mr. Huang Ziliang, Level I Division Rank Official of Nanjing Education Bureau, also outlined key requirements for the project to ensure the quality of participant engagement and successfully enhance digital literacy among educators. By optimising the training course structure, fostering more innovative practices, and prioritising the enhancement of project process management, these measures will effectively ensure the quality implementation of the training project. 

Drawing on the strategic vision for education digitalisation, Mr. Pan Dongbiao, Level II Rank Inspector of Nanjing Education Bureau, presented a comprehensive roadmap focusing on foundational digital infrastructure, industry connection, digital literacy, and cybersecurity, highlighting the pivotal role of vocational colleges in driving China’s digital modernisation and transformation. 

In conclusion, the launch of the Nanjing Vocational Colleges’ 2024 ICDL Teacher Training Project marks another significant step towards enhancing vocational education and digital literacy in China.
