ICDL Advocates for Enhanced Digital Skills in Education Through Collaboration with National Association of Private Educational Institutions (NAPEI)

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – October 2023 – ICDL Asia was invited to deliver a presentation highlighting the critical importance of digital skills in the rapidly evolving landscape of digital transformation during the National Association of Private Educational Institutions (NAPEI) members’ networking event held at DAIKIN Solution Plaza. The event was attended by influential figures from Malaysian education industry.

A notable highlight of the event was the insightful presentation by Mr. Nigel Ngiam, ICDL Asia Market Development Manager, who shed light on the three crucial traits of AID – Adaptability, Integrity, and Digital Fluency. He emphasised that these traits are fundamental for individuals to remain relevant in the ever-changing landscape of digital transformation.

Quoting a stark statistic from Dell Technologies’ survey conducted in February 2023 involving over 15,000 youths aged 18-26 across 15 countries, Mr. Ngiam revealed a concerning reality stating: “Twelve percent of youths had never received any form of education or training in digital skills prior to entering the workforce, whereas for those who did, 44% say that the education or training which they had received was insufficient for the needs of their job.” This revelation served as a catalyst for action, prompting NAPEI members to address the digital skills gap actively.

Fast forward to August 17, 2023, a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between ICDL and NAPEI, solidifying the collaborative effort to boost digital literacy in Malaysia’s private education sector.

The MoU was signed by Mr. Damien O’Sullivan, CEO of ICDL Foundation, and Ms. Lau Wai Cheng, Deputy President of NAPEI and witnessed by Ms. Tina Wu, General Manager of ICDL Asia, and Dr. Aslam Khan Bin Samahs Khan, Executive Council Member of NAPEI. Other notable individuals present during the ceremony include Ms. Jayanthi Thevarajah, Head of Education Services ASEAN at Enterprise Ireland, Mr. Nigel Ngiam, ICDL Asia Market Development Manager and attendees comprised of representatives from the government, NAPEI members and key stakeholders.

The primary objective of this collaboration is to empower NAPEI members to become Accredited Test Centers (ATCs) to implement ICDL programmes. By doing so, the initiative aims to enhance the digital skills proficiency of both students and staff within private educational institutions. The collaboration also seeks to foster a culture of digital proficiency, recognising and promoting digital skills as crucial employability skills.

NAPEI, established in 1987, represents over 60 private educational institutions and educational-related organizations across Malaysia. It plays a crucial role in maintaining the quality of education, acting as a unified representative body, liaising with the government, and providing research facilities and training to enhance Malaysia’s status as a centre of educational excellence.

In conclusion, the collaboration between ICDL and NAPEI signifies a crucial step towards enhancing the digital skills landscape in Malaysia. NAPEI members aim to play a significant role in fostering digital proficiency within the private education sector, aligning education with the demands of the rapidly evolving job market. The joint effort aims to bridge the digital skills gap and ensure that students and staff are well-prepared for digital transformation.
