Jiangsu Province Nanjing Engineering Higher Vocational College Named First ICDL Centre of Excellence in China


Nanjing, April 8, 2024 – Jiangsu Province Nanjing Engineering Higher Vocational College has recently been inaugurated as the first ICDL Centre of Excellence in China. The official plaque unveiling ceremony for the Vocational Education Centre of Excellence took place at Jiangsu Province Nanjing Engineering Higher Vocational College. The occasion symbolised a significant milestone in the institution’s commitment to meeting the evolving demands of the digital era through educational reform. 

Among the distinguished attendees were Mr. Damien O’Sullivan, CEO of ICDL Foundation, Ms. Tina Wu, General Manager of ICDL Asia, Mr. Lan Xiaoyu, General Manager of ICDL China, and key officials representing Jiangsu Province Nanjing Engineering Higher Vocational College including Mr. Tang Tao, Party Secretary for the School Committee, Mr. Pan Ruliang, Principal of Jiangsu Province Nanjing Engineering Higher Vocational College, Mr. Zhang Yuedong, Deputy Principal of Jiangsu Province Nanjing Engineering Higher Vocational College, Mr. He Chengyang, Director of the Foreign Affairs Office and the Party and Government Office, Mr. Xu Shuqing, Director of the Science and Technology Industry Department, alongside other university officials. 

During the ceremony, Mr. Tang Tao, Party Secretary for the School Committee expressed that implementing ICDL international digital certification is a crucial initiative for the school to actively respond to the demands of the digital age in educational reform. This collaboration will enable students to master the international in-demand digital skills, thereby enhancing their competitiveness in the future job market by improving their digital literacy standards. He looks forward to further deepening the collaboration through the initiative to jointly cultivate more high-quality talents with internationally recognised professional digital skills and a strong global perspective. 

Mr. Xu Shuqing, Director of the Science and Technology Industry Department delivered a comprehensive overview of international digital literacy standards implementation in the school. Through meticulously planned research-led initiatives, the school seamlessly integrated the ICDL Cyber Security module into its professional talent training and curriculum systems. This integration involved several key steps, including the introduction of the ICDL international standard syllabus, the development of localised teaching resource packages tailored to the specific needs of the students, and the organisation of school-wide ICDL Cyber Security Skills Competitions. The school’s proactive approach to implementing the international digital literacy project has garnered widespread recognition with outstanding project recognition from the China National Center of Educational Technology (NCET). Additionally, the school’s exemplary approach has also been further highlighted by the case study titled “Localisation Practice of ICDL Cyber Security International Standard,” recognised as a national exemplar in the field.  

Mr. Damien O’Sullivan, CEO of ICDL Foundation and Ms. Tina Wu, General Manager of ICDL Asia emphasised the significance of ICDL as a globally recognised digital skills standard, emphasising its commitment to equipping individuals with essential competencies necessary for success in various professional roles within the industry. Moreover, both of them also stressed the importance of both internationalisation and localisation of ICDL and praised the school’s efforts in adapting international standards to local contexts. This approach does not only ensure global standards but also tailors the curriculum to address the specific needs of the local community, thus enhancing its effectiveness and relevance. 

Mr. Zhang Yuedong, Deputy Principal of Jiangsu Province Nanjing Engineering Higher Vocational College also articulated his aspirations to advance collaboration in three key areas during the ceremony. He proposed integrating ICDL into the development of teacher digital literacy enhancement programs to uplift educators’ digital skills, further enhance the localisation of the curriculum to align with local needs and stressed the necessity of innovating incentives within the ICDL learning and certification framework to foster a sense of achievement and recognition among students.  

The entire session concluded with the official plaque unveiling ceremony, jointly conducted by Mr. Damien O’Sullivan, CEO of ICDL Foundation and Mr. Pan Ruliang, Principal of Jiangsu Province Nanjing Engineering Higher Vocational College signifies a solid step forward in the cooperation between ICDL and Jiangsu Province Nanjing Engineering Higher Vocational College. Both parties expressed their commitment to further collaboration, aiming to deepen their cooperation and embark on a new chapter of mutually beneficial endeavours.
